Data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence and automation are undoubtedly some of the most common buzzwords right now. It doesn’t matter what sector you work in, if you go to a conference, they’ll be something on the agenda that contains these themes.

I think we all agree that these things are coming, and the reality is that in a few years’ time all our jobs will look radically different. But when I talk to our community, very few people see how this transformation is going to take place. We’re on the cusp of a revolution but it’s not clear to anyone what the steps are in between now and the future!

At Projecting Success we’ve spent the last 12 months creating content for a Level 4 Data Analyst Apprenticeship that helps to up-skill valued employees that already have domain expertise. We think that this approach starts to provide answers to the questions that we posed above.

Part of the issue is due to the maturity of certain sectors. There’s no doubt that there’s a shortage of “data people”. I wonder if they are drawn to the sexy, fast paced sectors with massive profit margins and all the other sectors are being left behind? You can’t recruit these people because they’re too expensive and they’ll eventually leave because they’ll get bored with cleaning a load of 20 year old spreadsheets that “Steve” has on his personal machine. Up-skilling your invested staff has got to be the answer.
